The Quilters' Group

A Proud History of the Quilter's Group

Beginining in 2012, the Chestermere Whitecappers Quilters group has been dedicated to creating through the use of creative minds and technical skills, quilts and knitted items for the purpose of donating the finished items to groups in need in Chestermere and the surrounding area.  With some initial grant money, new sewing machines were purchased to help the group get into its stitches.  Aside from the creative works, the members of the group share discussions on issues of the day which can most certainly be interesting.  The group provides a wonderful venue to socialize and to express ideas while in between projects.  New members are most welcome and all you need to bring is interest.  Carol, Lorraine, Susie, Gail, Bonna, Barb, Rikki, Esther and Sue are willing of course, to teach you the skills to create your projects.  The quilters, knitters and crocheters meet Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 2:00PM. Feel free to drop in, meet the great group members and get started on a new life experience.

Where Do Donations Go?

After reviewing the collection of highly organized binders assembled each year by Carol Gardner, our Quilter historian, the beneficiaries  of the quilters’ fine work are many.  While Chestermere is a focus, other organizations and groups are included.  Here is a list of some of the recipients of donations made over the years:

Prince of Peace, Sheriff King Womens’ Shelter, Colonel Belcher Seniors Residences, Childrens’ Hospital, Chestermere Community Services, Chestermere Christmas with Dignity, Forest Lawn Seniors Home, Calgary Drop in Centre, Chestermere Food Bank, Ronald McDonal House, Chestermere Baby Essentials, Unwed Mothers Group, Skypoint Hospice, Glenmore Hospice and Rosedale Hospice.

In the spirit of passing on care, compassion and good will to the community, the Quilters have much of which to be proud.

Material Donations are Welcomed!

Although the quilters receive grants from time to time, the actual materials used to make the quilts and knitted goods such as children’s sweaters, hat/scarves and toques, are donated to the group.  Members take care in employing as many of the donations into the design and final products as much as possible.  Specifically items such as quilting material, cotton, flanellette and yarn (wool) as well as other leftover materials from home projects are gladly accepted.  The Quilters Group appreciates your generosity in helping them reach a key goal: to bring the warmth, compassion and caring to others in the community.

Donations can be dropped off during office hours and of course Thursday mornings when the Quilters Group is in action.
